I agree, my Mom wrote an English paper when she was in high school about Paul Simon being the poet and the poem this very song! I believe Paul Simon intended his works to be as powerful and profound as he could make them, to break the barriers of race and inequality that he was so passionate about in 1969.
and Simon still writes great poetry...so is the central image of this song a symbol or just a powerful image??
